This Respiratory Therapist opportunity is located in Kealakekua on the Island of Hawaii, a truly unique place to live and work. Set amidst lush green hills and just a short drive from some of the Big Island’s most beautiful coastline, Kealakekua offers a blend of small-town charm, rich Native Hawaiian history, and easy access to outdoor adventure. The area is best known for Kealakekua Bay, a marine sanctuary renowned for its crystal-clear water, snorkeling, and abundant sea life, as well as nearby beaches, hiking trails, coffee farms, and scenic drives along the Kona coast. Residents enjoy a relaxed island lifestyle with year-round warm weather, vibrant sunsets, and a strong sense of community. Within this hospital-based role, you will join a dedicated respiratory care team serving a diverse patient population in a regional medical setting. The facility provides essential services to the surrounding community, offering you the chance to practice at the top of your scope while making a visible difference in the lives of patients and families. You can expect a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment where respiratory therapists are respected as key clinical partners in patient care. Typical responsibilities include performing comprehensive respiratory assessments, delivering aerosol and bronchodilator therapies, managing oxygen and humidity systems, and overseeing invasive and non-invasive ventilator support. You will be involved in arterial blood gas sampling and analysis, participation in rapid response and code blue situations, and collaboration with physicians and nursing staff on individualized care plans. Depending on department needs, you may rotate through units such as medical-surgical, telemetry, critical care, and the emergency department, providing broad clinical exposure and ongoing skill development. A typical day may include morning ventilator rounds, adjustment of ventilator settings in coordination with the care team, patient education for those with chronic lung disease, and timely documentation in the electronic medical record. You may assist with transport of ventilated patients within the hospital, provide respiratory support during procedures, and respond to respiratory-related calls throughout the facility. Patient assignments are designed to support safe, high-quality care, and the smaller-community setting means you can build strong, ongoing relationships with patients and colleagues. The hospital environment emphasizes teamwork, professionalism, and patient-centered care. Respiratory therapists work closely with physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals in a supportive atmosphere where your input is valued. Because the facility serves as a key healthcare hub for the region, you will gain meaningful experience managing a wide range of respiratory conditions, from acute exacerbations of COPD and asthma to postoperative care and critical care cases. This variety makes the position a strong addition to your professional portfolio and a rewarding step in your respiratory therapy career. The schedule includes a mix of shifts that may involve days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays depending on department staffing needs. This structure allows for continuity of care and provides exposure to different aspects of hospital operations, including both routine and emergent cases. The environment is ideal for individuals who value a close-knit team, flexible responsibilities, and the chance to play an integral role in delivering essential healthcare services to a welcoming island community.
